Bratislava City Hall Embraces Ministry Decision on R7 highway Stretch

Bratislava, August 26 (TASR) - The City of Bratislava embraces the decision made by the Transport, Posts and Telecommunications Ministry earlier in the day to go back to the originally planned route for the R7 highway between Bratislava and the nearby village of Dunajska Luzna, City Hall's spokesperson Beatrice Szaboova told TASR on Thursday.

The 7-kilometre stretch is set to begin at the Port Bridge in Bratislava, run alongside the Danube River and around the Slovnaft oil-refinery to Dunajska Luzna.

Bratislava has long been in favour of the 'A' variant, which now has also been supported by the ministry. Had the 'C' variant been supported, it would have had a negative impact on the lives of 100,000 people in Bratislava, according to the City Hall.

"The variant that we've proposed will improve the overall transport situation in southern Bratislava. In the future, the road could be connected to the D1 motorway," said Transport Minister Jan Figel at a press conference earlier in the day.

The construction work on the R7 section, which will include seven bridges, should begin in early 2014 at the latest, with the costs expected to reach €72 million.
