Bratislava, August 25 (TASR) - Slovak Parliamentary Chairman Richard Sulik (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS) will face a no-confidence vote in parliament, Smer-SD Chairman and former prime minister Robert Fico said at a press conference in Bratislava on Wednesday.
Fico said the reason for this actions is mostly the approach of Sulik's party towards the referendum (planned for September 18 and initiated by SaS), as well as a host of other transgressions. "We are launching all the steps needed to summon an extraordinary session of Parliament to deal with the proposal to dismiss him. What Mr. Sulik is doing is gravely endangering the legal system and he is earnestly degrading democracy. Smer-SD cannot respect the Parliamentary Chairman to be a person who mistakes his actions in politics with irresponsible fun," stated Fico.
Specifically, he criticised SaS for failing to nominate its representative for the Central Electoral Commission (UVK) which is managing the September 18 referendum that SaS initiated. "What he is doing in connection with the referendum is a mockery of the Constitution and of Slovak citizens. Sulik and his party have launched a petition activity without any responsibility ... and after the election, they consider the referendum to be an obstacle to their political agenda," he said, adding that out of 50 regional electoral commissions, SaS nominated their people in only five. In district commissions, however, the party has a representative in each one.
"It could be because it is only they (district commission representatives) that are paid for this activity," stated Fico. He criticised Sulik for saying for news portal aktualne.sk that SaS considers the district representatives to be important because they can influence the counting of the votes. "This statement is inexcusable. He is directly claiming that the results of a referendum can be influenced. What kind of person, for God's sake, is in the post of parliamentary chairman?" pondered Fico.
At the extraordinary parliamentary session, Smer-SD wants to speak about reasons why Sulik shouldn't be in his function. "Let the Coalition elect another chairman, but we cannot respect such adventurers in one of the most important posts in Slovakia. We want an experienced politician who respects the political system in this post, not some adventurer," said Fico.
