New Road Opens to Relieve Traffic Burden in Banska Bystrica Region

Zarnovica, November 19 (TASR) - Slovak Premier Robert Fico officially opened nearly ten kilometres of the new R1 road between Zarnovica and Sasovske Podhradie (Banska Bystrica region) on Thursday.

During the ceremony Fico said he appreciated the fact that the construction company R1-Eurovia completed the work three months ahead of schedule, and that the costs did not exceed the contractually fixed price.

According to National Highway Company (NDS) Director Igor Chom, the completed part of the road, financed from both EU structural funds and the Slovak state, has cost approximately €51.78 million.

The new link will re-route some of the traffic from the first-class Bzenica - Hlinik nad Hronom - Lehotky pod Brehmi road as well as allow drivers to go faster while at the same time lower the risk of collision.

People in nearby towns and villages are welcoming the early opening of the road as, according to Zarnovica mayor Kamil Danka, the new road will make travelling for jobs easier.

Later, 11 bridges and two interchange junctions will be built. The second part of the Lehotka pod Brehmi - Sasovske Podhradie road is to be completed by October 2010. However, the construction company again hopes to finish the work four months earlier.
