Figel: Fico's Legacy in Public Finances Unsustainable

Bratislava, August 24 (TASR) – According to Christian Democratic Movement (KDH) chairman Jan Figel, the Wednesday’s Coalition Council confirmed the bad situation of the public finances.
"The legacy, which remained after (former Prime Minister Robert) Fico’s government in the sphere of public finances, is unsustainable. Measures are inevitable for stabilisation and for an economic and social development of Slovakia," he stated.
The planned changes in the tax and deductions system will be discussed by an expert group. "We have agreed that we will submit complete comprehensive solutions, not parts that stir up outrage and criticism, in many times justified. The proposals will be dealt with by an expert group consisting of representatives from the coalition parties," said Prime Minister Iveta Radicova. She assumes the assessment process will be completed in a week at the Coalition council planned for Tuesday, August 31.
Radicova did not make any specific comment whether the Government plans to increase the tax rate. "Let’s not speak about any percentages yet, it will be the job of the expert group. Taxation of consumption is fairer than the taxation of work. Consumption is your decision, it is less fair to tax the work, because it is rewarded in a differing manner," said the Premier, adding that the Government has to make some decision.
