Employers Disapprove of Raising Levies to Consolidate Public Finances

Bratislava, August 23 (TASR) - Employers are opposed to the Government's plan to consolidate public finances via, inter alia, raising levies, Martin Hostak of the Republic's Union of Employers (RUZ) told TASR in a statement on Monday.

"An additional burden placed on labour would complicate dealing with the society-wide problem of unemployment," reads the statement.

Employers grouped in RUZ view the consolidation of public finances as the key priority of the new Cabinet. However, this should be accomplished by undertaking substantial austerity measures.

"Measures aimed at reversing the unfavourable developments have to focus on making significant savings in public expenditures," according to Hostak.

He added that it's necessary to remove unjustified tax and levy exemptions that make the entire system less transparent. However, "removing the exemptions shouldn't lead to an overall rise in tax and levy burdens but should instead lay the groundwork for a gradual decrease in levy rates," said Hostak.
