Rosova Wants Education Minister Left Out of Professor Appoinments

Bratislava, August 23 (TASR) - SDKU-DS lawmaker Tatiana Rosova said on Monday that she has submitted to parliament an amendment to the Universities Act proposing that the Education Ministry should be excluded from the process of appointing university professors.
Rosova, who expects the bill to be voted on in September, argues that the minister acts only as an intermediary at the moment, submitting according to the law the appointment proposals of universities' scientific councils, after approval by the rectors, to the Slovak president. This means that the minister's role is superfluous.
"Neither the law nor any directive sets any deadline for the minister to submit the proposal to the president ... I'm afraid in the past we've witnessed the minister procrastinating with such proposals without justification," she said.
In the previous parliament, Rosova was particularly critical of the conduct of then minister Jan Miklos, who held back the appointment of 37 professors at St. Elizabeth's University of Health and Social Work. The ministry at the time insisted that the accreditation committee should complete a review of the criteria justifying the nominations.
