Bratislava, August 21 (TASR) - The consumption of natural gas in Slovakia in 2009 reached 5.9 million cubic metres, with the domestic gas output reaching 103 million cubic metres, according to a recent report released by the Economy and Construction Ministry.
The ministry expects the domestic output to fall in long-term, if new deposits are not discovered. At any rate, as much as 98 percent of Slovakia's natural gas consumption is covered by import.
The gas utility Slovensky Plynarensky Priemysel (SPP) two years ago signed a contract with Russian concern Gazprom Export for the delivery of 1 trillion cubic metres of gas over 20 years.
The Office for the Regulation of Network Industries (URSO) recently criticised the deal, with URSO head Jozef Holjencik stating that had SPP been buying gas on the spot market now, its price would have been 50 percent lower.
Slovakia, which is virtually dependent on Russian gas supplies, suffered a shock in January 2009, as a dispute between Moscow and Kiev over the conditions of gas transport through Ukraine left Slovakia cut off from Russian gas for nearly two weeks.
