Bratislava, August 20 (TASR) - President Ivan Gasparovic said on Friday that he isn't in favour of an amendment to the Competencies Act that would allow the re-emergence of the environment ministry as of September 1 and that he will discuss his objections with all those involved in order to decide whether to sign it into law.
Speaking at a news conference, Gasparovic restated that he believes that the environment ministry should not only hold responsibility for the environment but also for forests and water. "Such a ministry would handle major natural disasters more effectively, as is evident from recent developments," he said.
The environment ministry is expected to ensure rapid and efficient relief for affected people and to adopt effective measures that would prevent yet more damage to property.
Lawmakers voted to approve an amendment to the Competencies Act on August 11, effectively recreating the state of affairs in place before July 1, when the environment ministry was merged with the Agriculture Ministry at the instigation of Robert Fico's former administration.
