Sulik: Some People Paying Lower Taxes at Expense of Others

Bratislava, August 19 (TASR) - The prepared changes in tax and deductions recently announced by the Finance Ministry, the Labour, Social Affairs and the Family Ministry and the Health Ministry are steps in right direction for which the co-ruling Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party will fight, Parliamentary Chairman and SaS head Richard Sulik said on Thursday.
"Those who are affected will cry now, but we need to realise that it's only exemptions that are going to be abolished. This means that some people in this country paid lower taxes at the expense of others," said Sulik, adding that he himself has been championing such changes for years, earning himself the title 'theoretical avanturist' from former premier Robert Fico (Smer-SD).
Even though Finance Minister Ivan Miklos (SDKU-DS) and Labour Minister Jozef Mihal (SaS) didn't discuss the measures first with their parties' remaining two coalition partners (Christian Democrats/KDH and Most-Hid), Sulik claims that inner-coalition agreements haven't been violated.
"The Coalition Agreement, and the Government Manifesto in particular, contain points stating that we want to increase the level of justice in taxes. We also need to fill up state coffers, so exemptions in taxes and deductions will be abolished," said Sulik.
On the other hand, Sulik is still expecting discussions on the matter within the Coalition.
Meanwhile, critics claim that the measures will hurt mainly the middle class.
