Miklos Says Slovakia Requires Clear Guidelines to Deal with Floods

Bratislava, August 18(TASR) - Slovakia lacks clear guidelines and the wherewithal to deal with flood situations as is evident from the fact that the previous government earmarked €3.3 million to handle floods in this year's budget but €3 million of that refers to 2008 and 2009, Finance Minister Ivan Miklos said after Government discussed floods-related issues on Wednesday.

"We are working hard on new guidelines and need to appropriate a greater amount of funds in the coming years," the minister told reporters, noting that he would table a bill next week aimed at freeing up more money to pay for the rescue and clean-up work. Government treats this work as a priority even though the public finances it has taken over from its predecessor are in disarray, said Miklos. To that end it was decided to release €13.3 million towards meeting the cost of rescue works, with the bulk, €7.4 million for the regional government in Presov, and €2.5 million in Kosice Region.
