Radicova: It's High Time Government Adopted Anti-Flood Scheme

Handlova, August 17 (TASR) - It's about time the Government adopted a programme aimed at launching an anti-flood system, rather than just tackle repercussions and deal with emergency operations following floods, Prime Minister Iveta Radicova told journalists on Tuesday night.

Speaking upon visiting flood-stricken areas in the town of Handlova (Trencin region), the premier called the situation in the area critical. She added that this is obviously why she interrupted her holiday abroad and came back to Slovakia earlier than planned.

What is important, she noted, is that floodings tend to occur in new places. "This is the price we're paying for having neglected the prevention. I'm speaking in plural tense, as I don't mean to point to specific previous Governments because each of them neglected the preventive side," she asserted.

Handlova mayor Rudolf Podoba updated the premier on damage incurred on roads and the town's entire infrastructure, with the damage amounting to some €15 million.
