Bratislava, August 15 (TASR) - Extensive flooding in the Upper Nitra area on Sunday claimed its first victim, Lucia Garajova from the Interior Ministry told TASR later in the day.
A storm lasting several hours in Upper Nitra caused local floods, with the towns of Handlova and Prievidza (Trencin region) facing the gravest results. The overflowing Handlovka River shortly after noon submerged several roads in Prievidza as well as a road connecting Prievidza and nearby Handlova.
"One person, a man from Prievidza, has gone missing, and unfortunately, one victim has been reported, too," said Garajova, adding that the dead man was probably from Handlova though exact information is not yet available.
All available fire-fighters and police officers in Trencin region are now on duty. Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic is currently moving on from Handlova to the nearby town of Novaky.
