Bugar: Many SMK Members Want to Join Most-Hid

Bratislava, August 14 (TASR) - Many members of the ethnic-Hungarian SMK party are interested in joining Most-Hid, TASR learned from Most-Hid chairman Bela Bugar.

Bugar couldn't specify the exact numbers. He stressed that the purpose of the party is not to enlarge its ranks at all costs, but rather "have a lot of active people everywhere, who know what politics is about".

Most-Hid spokesperson Nora Czuczorova confirmed that Bugar obtained the information about the former SMK members applying for Most-Hid membership from regional and district party structures.

She added that there are some 3,000 applicants for Most-Hid membership, with unspecified number of them being former SMK members. According to Czuczorova, the criteria are the same for them as for people who've never been part of SMK.

When it comes to new members joining Most-Hid, Bugar is careful. "Those who joined early on [before the June 12 parliamentary election, when Most-Hid was a non-parliamentary party] and took the risks now have the right to scrutinise every applicant to determine whether they're not joining only to enjoy certain benefits," said Bugar, adding that Most-Hid is not about benefits.
