Radicova and Zitnanska Propose Duty to Go Public With State Contracts

Bratislava, August 13 (TASR) - Prime Minister Iveta Radicova and Justice Minister Lucia Zitnanska have come up with a proposal whereby it would be obligatory to make contracts concerning the use of public funds or state property available to the public as of January 1, 2011, TASR learnt on Friday.

The initiative, under which contracts won't come into effect unless they're made available to the public, has been submitted for comments by ministries.

"The proposed amendment aims to introduce clear-cut rules that will ensure that public property and public funds are managed transparently and economically. We believe that going public with contracts will increase pressure on public authorities to manage funds in a responsible manner," according to a statement released by Radicova and Zitnanska.

They added that it's about time that disadvantageous and overpriced contracts were done away with.

In order for contracts to come into effect, they will have to be disclosed on the internet or in the Commercial Bulletin. According to Radicova and Zitnanska, the initiative is also designed to do away with the practice of signing contracts from which the state either can't withdraw or suffers massive penalties for doing so.
