Jurcyza: Austerity Measures Won't Affect Teachers

Bratislava, August 13 (TASR) - The planned 10-percent cuts in salaries at individual ministries won't affect teachers' pay, Education Minister Eugen Jurcyza said after the Government session on Friday.

"This certainly won't have an impact on the salaries of teachers, as that's the agreement concluded among the Coalition. The Government considers education to be a priority," said Jurzyca.

Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic said that he sees no problem with applying austerity measures to bureaucrats, but he doesn't think that it's right for firefighters and police officers to be affected by the austerity measures, either. A similar view is also held by Defence Minister Lubomir Galko when it comes to soldiers.

"In light of the upcoming new organisational structure, I see room for reducing salary costs. I don't want to lower the pay of competent and skillful people, however," said Culture Minister Daniel Krajcer.

According to the Coalition Council agreement, the austerity measures will also cover ministers' salaries, which are to be reduced by 10 percent. "Slovakia needs to save, politicians need to save, and that also includes ministers. I'm determined to save appropriately as well ... Sending out this message is the right thing to do," said Jurcyza.

Some Cabinet members have already stated that the austerity measures will lead to lay-offs among civil servants.
