Lipsic: Fines on Hauliers for Violating Toll Collection May Go Down

Bratislava, August 12 (TASR) - Penalties for hauliers violating toll-collection regulations may be differentiated depending on whether the hauliers acted deliberately or not, Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic said on Thursday.

The fine level that can be imposed on the spot reaches almost €1,700 at the moment.

"It's important to make distinctions when hauliers don't notice that they've used up their credit. In such cases, €50 may be appropriate. Conversely, road hauliers who deliberately cheat and thus represent unfair competition to honest hauliers may receive a higher fine," said Lipsic after meeting representatives of the Union of Slovak Road Hauliers (UNAS).

UNAS is promoting legislative changes vis-a-vis collecting tolls that should do away with certain contradictory provisions. "We know that it is forbidden to halt and wait on a first category road. Another law says that we have to halt and wait if the onboard unit has been corrupted," said Rudolf Pales from UNAS. Lipsic promised to help the Union push through certain changes to the law.

The interior minister further announced that the ministry is carrying out an inspection into police action against protesting hauliers in January, just days after the electronic road-toll system was launched.
