Horsky: Bill on Reducing MPs Immunity May Have Chance

Bratislava, August 12 (TASR) - The proposal aimed at reducing the immunity of MPs may have a chance of being passed if the immunity of judges is excluded and its wording undergoes considerable changes that would allow the Smer-SD party to support it, political analyst Michal Horsky told TASR on Thursday.

"Robert Fico and Smer-SD have to think hard about whether they want to see the ruling Coalition use this truncheon on them without a break for at least two years if the law doesn't pass," said Horsky.

Political analyst Rastislav Toth views restricting MPs immunity as an illusion rather than a realistic prospect. "I can't imagine why MPs would impinge on their own advantages when they come in useful to all of them at some time or other," he said, adding that he would be happy, of course, if the proposal gained the required two-thirds of the votes in Parliament.

"The mistake happened at the very beginning, however, as the immunity was too broad and, in addition, there didn't need to be any at all in a liberal-democratic state," claimed the analyst, predicting that the proposal won't obtain the necessary number of votes. "Someone will probably make sure that it isn't passed," he added.
