Bratislava, August 12 (TASR) - The number of people applying for Slovak living abroad certificates dropped last year to 958, the Office of Slovaks Living Abroad announced on Thursday.
The Office explained that this was because of a fall in applications from Slovaks living in Serbia in the third quarter of 2009, due to the expected abolition of the visa duty for those travelling to the Schengen area, which eventually took place on December 19, 2009. Serbia was the biggest source of applications last year - 854.
Owners of the certificate are entitled to receive temporary residence permits in Slovakia and can find job there without special permission. Apart from this, they can apply for Slovak citizenship after three years of uninterrupted stay in the country.
