Bratislava, August 11 (TASR) - Transport Minister Jan Figel said on Wednesday that he may reconsider building the D1 motorway via private public partnerships (PPP) unless all the money needed to bankroll the €4-billion project is secured by the deadline of August 31.
The deadline has been moved back many times, starting from mid-April to the end of the month, then to May 28, June 11 and June 30.
The European Investment Bank (EIB) agreed to extend a €1-billion loan when it is approved by the European Commission, which is now in the process of reviewing the environmental effects of the project, including the possible destruction of a rare peat bog in the north of the country.
More funds would come from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (€250 million) and commercial banks, while Slovak taxpayers would pay €9 billion over 30 years for the construction and maintenance of the motorways.
