Parliament to Discuss Legislation - First Time Since June Elections

Bratislava, August 10 (TASR) - Parliamentary Chairman Richard Sulik (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS) has opened a fourth Parliamentary session on Tuesday, shortly after the third session featuring debate on the new Government's Manifesto was closed.

MPs will cast their votes on laws for the first since the June 12 parliamentary election, with 81 MPs taking part in the legislative process for the first time ever.

There are 12 items on the agenda, including three bills. Iveta Radicova's Government has submitted the General Administration Act amendment and the Criminal Code amendment, wanting both of them to be discussed in a fast-tracked procedure.

The third Governmental proposal is a constitutional amendment to allow to restrict immunity of lawmakers. For such a move, however, the Coalition will need also opposition votes, as 90 votes are required to change constitutional laws and the Coalition has only 79.

The Government intends to change the General Administration Act in order to have the Environment Ministry operating on its own again, as of September 1. Furthermore, the Criminal Code amendment is designed to allow courts to return cases to prosecution authorities only due to procedural flaws. In both cases, MPs have given consent to fast-tracked procedures taking place.
