Euro Hampering Tourism in South-eastern Slovakia

Bratislava, August 9 (TASR) - Fewer visitors have been coming to south-eastern parts of Slovakia, particularly from Poland, with the introduction of the euro seen as partly to blame.

"Currently, we are registering fewer tourists in the Spis and Gemer areas," project coordinator for co-operation between Northern Hungarian Borsod-Abaujd-Zemplen areas and Slovak Spis-Gemer areas Michal Bartos has told TASR.

It is thought that developing tourism via co-operation between the two historically linked areas should help increase the number of visitors. To this end, the two countries are planning in September to introduce tourist packages that involve time spent in both Hungary and Slovakia. These will include opportunities to visit churches, castles and national parks or even to take the so-called iron trip to explore historic mining sites.

The drop in tourism has affected Northern Hungary as well, although less than expected. "The statistics aren't as bad as predicted," TASR was told by Katalin Nagyova, the project manager of the co-operation programme between Hungary and Slovakia. She added that the Hungarian Borsod-Abauj-Zemplen area has even seen more tourists in early 2010, albeit mainly from Hungary.
