Bratislava, August 9 (TASR) - As the overall area planted with potatoes in Slovakia has dropped to 11,000 hectares, it's highly likely that Slovak potatoes will be sold out very quickly this season, chairman of the Slovak Association of Potato Growers Viliam Bezak said on Monday.
"Due to the fact that a similar situation prevails across almost the entire EU, while certain large producers outside the EU, such as Russia and Belarus, are suffering from major droughts, we should count on potato prices growing this season. It will be no surprise if prices in October are 50-70 percent higher than in the same period last year," said Bezak.
Back in June, the association indicated that heavy rainfall in the second quarter of 2010 damaged the soil structure and therefore significantly worsened the prospects for this year's harvest.
Potatoes, which are traditionally described as the "second bread" in Slovakia, are grown mainly in the hilly areas of Orava, Liptov and Spis.
