Bratislava, August 10 (TASR) - The Directorate of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Regional Policy is currently dealing with Slovakia's request to provide resources to alleviate the damage caused by the floods in late May and early June, the Government Office press department announced on Tuesday.
Slovakia managed to send its request on time (July 16). It will be considered in the usual manner, including by taking the financial capabilities of the European budget into account, Foreign Affairs Minister Mikulas Dzurinda said recently. He expects the Commission to reach a decision quickly and grant the appropriate sum, however.
EU rules specify that member countries can apply for aid from the Solidarity Fund if the damage exceeds 0.6 percent of gross national income for the past year. This amounts to €378.21 million in Slovakia's case.
The current estimate for the damage caused by the floods in May and June amounts to approximately €695.1 million, with the Agriculture Ministry reporting the highest figure - namely, €575.86 million. Facilities falling under the Government Office, the Culture Ministry, the Nuclear Oversight Authority and the former Construction and Regional Development Ministry are among those affected, but the extent of the damage in their cases isn't yet known.
