Radicova: SaS Abusing Public Finances When Setting Up MPs Offices

Bratislava, August 6 (TASR) - Using taxpayers' money to pay for other MPs' offices in Bratislava, sometimes in houses that the MPs directly own, even though they already have offices close to Parliament, is preposterous and absurd, said Prime Minister Iveta Radicova (SDKU-DS) in a statement provided to TASR by her spokesman Rado Bato.

"This is an unequivocal abuse of public finances. It's also unacceptable to have the owners of these houses profiting from the taxpayers' money that the Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party is entitled to based on its election results. They can't pour public finances back and forth like this," reads the statement.

Pravda daily on Friday reported on a company called Liberal House, which was set up recently by SaS government ministers and lawmakers, including Parliamentary Chairman Richard Sulik and Culture Minister Daniel Krajcer. The limited liability company will specialise in renting out its property and offering related services. SaS has offered its MPs the option of setting up offices in premises owned by the new company.

Fair-Play Alliance director Zuzana Wienk thinks that this case represents an unequivocal conflict of interests and unethical conduct. This has been denied by Sulik, who said that everything will be in order as long as the company rents out space at an appropriate market price. "The law doesn't prohibit such a step," he pointed out.
