Bratislava, August 5 (TASR) - Construction company Skanska SK in the next few days is set to begin work on the R4 highway, a 14-kilometre road that will connect Kosice to the village of Milhost, located south of the city and near the border with Hungary.
The costs are set to reach €77.69 million, and the road should be ready by the end of 2012, said Transport Minister Jan Figel on Thursday, when the contract was signed between Skanska SK and the National Highway Company (NDS).
"Transport is a strategic tool for developing the country. This highway could significantly help the eastern regions of Slovakia to develop," said Figel.
The minister is confident that the R4 tender was won by a fair and the least expensive bid. "The fair bid means that we've started to use public finances in a more effective manner," he commented.
Figel said that his ministry will soon launch talks with the Hungarian authorities in an attempt to spur them into working more intensely on their road infrastructure as well.
