KDH Council Elects Figel as Party Leader in 2010 General Elections

Trnava, December 12 (TASR) - The Christian Democrats (KDH) Council at a session in Trnava on Saturday, as expected, elected KDH chairman Jan Figel as the party leader in the general elections scheduled for the summer of 2010.

According to Figel, it is immensely important that the Council agreed on the criteria that will determine the order of 150 candidates in the list who are to be selected yet. "I'm happy that the resolution from 1994 has been strengthened, and we've set off towards the principle 'one mandate is enough'. The mandate of an MP won't be compatible with the mandate of a mayor or a local/regional councillor," said Figel.

The fundamental criteria for selecting a candidate will be loyalty to the party and its ideas, expertise of the candidate-wannabe, representation of all regions, and balance based on gender and age, said former KDH chair Pavol Hrusovsky.

"Our regional structures and subsequently, in January, the KDH Council will deal with the nominations," said Figel, who didn't rule out unambiguously a post-election co-operation with Smer-SD. At the same time, however, he noted that KDH wants to be an alternative to Smer.
