Economist: Slovakia's Change into Social and Ecological State Successful

Bratislava, December 12 (TASR) - After the radical changes in 1989, Slovakia as a nation had to decide whether to strike out on its own, chairman of the Slovak Economic Society - Independent Association of Slovak Economists (SES-NEZES) Ladislav Lysak told TASR on Saturday.

According to Lysak, Slovakia had to consider at that time whether and how to break free from a double influence of Moscow and Prague. Now he thinks that the attempts of Slovakia to change into a market economy and socially- and ecologically-oriented country were successful. "I regret only that we lost Sk660 billion (€22 million) after the split of the (Czechoslovak) federation over a 'brotherly sharing'. This is a sum that can hardly be forgotten," he added.

The current social system isn't easy, however, assesses Lysak, claiming that many things are not working as they should. "I'm sorry, for example, that young people can't start up today with a better state support. Older generations feel deprived, too, as they hoped that the state will take better care of them," he added.
