Harabin Stands Pat on Independent Audit at Supreme Court

Bratislava, August 4 (TASR) - The Supreme Court insists that an independent audit of its economic performance should be carried out rather than one by the Finance Ministry, Court head Stefan Harabin said in a statement on Wednesday.

"We have nothing to hide, the first contracts from the period since I became the Court's chairman are already available on the internet," said former justice minister Harabin.

According to him, this concerns economic contracts in areas that involve spending the largest share of funds, such as information and communication technologies.

A dispute has been taking place between the Finance Ministry and the Supreme Court, with ministry auditors making four failed attempts to carry out an inspection at the Court in order to find out whether it uses financial resources effectively and in accordance with pertinent laws. Harabin alleges that executive power - namely, the Finance Ministry - shouldn't be allowed to carry out an audit of the Supreme Court.

In a statement on Wednesday, Harabin added that he would send a letter to Finance Minister Ivan Miklos. "We've found out that after a politicised audit the Supreme Court will be deprived of funds earmarked for assistants to judges and that obstacles such as taking offices away from judges will be put in place," said Harabin.
