Bratislava, August 3 (TASR) - Slovakia won't become part of the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) only by having the Slovak Parliament pass the framework agreement on joining EFSF.
"We'll become an EFSF member only after we change the legislation. The current legislation doesn't enable us to accept such a guarantee, so we'll need to modify our laws in September accordingly," Finance Minister Ivan Miklos (SDKU-DS) said at the parliamentary Finance Committee session on Tuesday.
The €750-billion guarantee mechanism is designed to help the European countries in financial needs, with the Slovakia's contribution set at €4.4 billion.
The decision to take part in EFSF was approved by all members of the parliamentary Finance Committee, who also recommended the Parliament to pass the EFSF framework agreement. Also, the committee uninamously passed the request of Peter Kazimir (Smer-SD) to have the Finance Ministry submit regular reports on the status of European budget rules reform.
Miklos told the committee members that the Government maintains its dismissive stance on providing a loan to Greece, and will recommend MPs to vote against it. The Finance Committee didn't pass any decision on the issue, as Coalition MP Anton Marcincin (KDH) and Opposition MPs abstained from voting.
