Miskov Against Transferring Foreign Trade to Foreign Affairs Ministry

Bratislava, August 3 (TASR) - Economy and Construction Minister Juraj Miskov (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS) fundamentally disagrees with the proposal for an amendment to the Competences Act that is currently under discussion and according to which the Economy and Construction Ministry's foreign trade powers with the exception of military materials should be transferred to the Foreign Affairs Ministry, TASR learned from the press report issued by the Economy Ministry on Tuesday.

According to Miskov, the proposal contradicts the Government Manifesto, which contains no mention of transferring foreign trade powers under the remit of the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Because of this, the Economy Ministry will use all means at its disposal to block the proposal, while searching for an optimal model for co-operation with the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Losing management over foreign trade would significantly weaken the flexibility of the Economy Ministry when dealing with investment and energy issues and attempts to improve the business environment. It would also mean that processing information and drawing up documents and materials for bilateral talks with foreign partners would be more difficult.

Miskov said that there is absolutely no benefit in the proposed change in terms of financial efficiency.
