Figel Wants to Complete First PPP Package This Summer, at Lower Cost

Bratislava, August 2 (TASR) - Transport Minister Jan Figel wants to finish the first package of PPP (public-private partnership) projects by the end of this August, and so intends to keep to the deadline set by his predecessor Lubomir Vazny (Smer-SD) when it comes to the construction of selected sections of the D1 motorway in northern Slovakia.

"We want to finish this by the end of August in line with the deadline," said Figel at a press conference on Monday, adding that the project should be made cheaper, however.

The new minister thereby confirmed that he wants to continue motorway construction via PPP projects. "I want them as one of the pillars of road-network construction," he said.

Roads should still be built with money from EU Funds. Almost 70 percent of the allocated sum of €3.1 million is in the Operation Programme Transport at the moment. Figel also wants to gain some more EU money for Slovak roads, but he doesn't know how much as yet.

The ministry should be given new powers as of the autumn, including tourism, housing construction, regional development and EU Funds. Figel has praised what he calls the synergy of his agenda.
