Slovak Commercial Representations to Come Under Foreign Ministry

Bratislava, August 1 (TASR) - It appears that Slovakia's commercial representations abroad will come under the remit of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, despite the Economy Ministry's interest in retaining control.
To promote the change, Foreign Affairs Minister Mikulas Dzurinda (SDKU-DS) refers to the Government Manifesto, which was unanimously approved at the Government session earlier this week, with Economy Minister Juraj Miskov (Freedom and Solidarity/SaS) also voting in favour of the document.
Miskov argued before the government session that alternative changes should be considered that would allow his ministry to hold on to the supervision of commercial counsellors, but according to SaS founding member Martin Poliacik, he wasn't allowed to put his case properly.
Dzurinda claims that no partisan policy is involved and that the aim is to unify the Government's activities abroad. He said that it will not only be more economical but also more effective if commercial counsellors are made answerable to ambassadors.
According to the Economy Ministry's website, Slovakia's commercial counsellors are currently active in 48 cities around the world.
