Government: We Have to Tackle Troubles We've Inherited

Bratislava, July 29 (TASR) - The new Cabinet is trying to tackle many problems inherited from its predecessors, Government Office said in a statement in response to criticism expressed by former premier and chairman of currently the strongest opposition Smer-SD Robert Fico on Thursday.
"Slovakia has the second highest unemployment rate in the European Union, municipalities running on a crisis footing, the economy in the red, growing debts, lawsuits involving PPP (public-private partnership) projects, faculty hospitals buried in debts, unresolved corruption cases, justice in a catastrophic state and devastated public finances. These and many other troubles are addressed in the Manifesto, and we stand ready to discuss any solutions at hand," reads the statement.
Earlier on Thursday Fico lit into the new Cabinet, saying that the Manifesto is written evidence that Slovakia has embarked on a path of deregulation, privatisation, and weakening of the social state. He described the Manifesto as a betrayal of all voters because SDKU-DS, Christian Democrats (KDH), Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) and Most-Hid had, ahead of the June elections, touted social populism in order to emulate then ruling Smer-SD's genuine social policies.
According to Fico, the parties never intended to follow their election programmes as these fly in the face of the values the parties stand for – which are right-wing.
