Gasparovic: ICJ's Ruling on Kosovo Piece of Good News for Separatists

Bratislava, July 23 (TASR) - Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic said on Friday that he was surprised by the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the Hague a day earlier which ruled that Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence in 2008 didn't violate international law.

According to Gasparovic, the ICJ's ruling has reduced the scope for further debate.

Gasparovic stated that Slovakia should persevere in its negative stance towards Kosovo's independence, as international agreements and international law need to be respected. "The United Nations base their policies on this. There must be something that would be respected. Unilateral views in such questions are quite dangerous," said Gasparovic.

Slovakia must continue in activities aimed at establishing peaceful co-existence between Pristina and Belgrade, although it's hardly to expect that the ICJ's ruling will bring peace, said Gasparovic. Slovakia should therefore re-evaluate the planned withdrawal of its troops from the KFOR mission in the region, added Gasparovic.

The Slovak president thinks that the Court's ruling has been a piece of good news for separatists across Europe. Gasparovic said that he isn't able to imagine that Spain would change its stance, nor would Slovakia, given the new situation.
