Medved Meets Top American and British Representatives in Bratislava

Bratislava, December 11 (TASR) - Slovak Environment Minister Jozef Medved on Friday met chargé d'affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Bratislava Keith Eddins, TASR was told later by ministry spokesperson Jana Kaplanova.

The main topic of the discussions was the ongoing UN climate summit in Copenhagen. Eddins confirmed that U.S. President Barack Obama will attend the summit and pointed out the opportunities for the United States to co-operate with Slovakia as a direct partner.

According to Medved, Europe will mainly lean towards a 30-percent reduction in greenhouse-gas emissions when compared to the level of emissions in 1990. "Slovakia will certainly join the countries that will have high ambitions," he stated.

At the end of the meeting, Eddins praised Slovakia's approach to environmental issues, and the two sides agreed that mutually profitable co-operation will continue at an intense level in the future.

The Slovak minister also met British Ambassador to Slovakia Michael Roberts, with whom he also discussed problems linked to climate change as well as the Copenhagen summit.

According to Roberts, Britain wants the Copenhagen agreement to be ambitious, fair and effective. He stated that Slovakia could set an example for other countries via its potential vis-a-vis renewable energy sources and economic growth.
