Kia Motors Slovakia Boosts Output of Both Vehicles and Engines

Zilina, July 21 (TASR) - South Korean carmaker Kia Motors Slovakia in Teplicka nad Vahom (Zilina region) increased first-half car production by more than 67 percent on the year to more than 107,000 cars, in a two-shift operation, corporate spokesperson Dusan Dvorak told reporters.

In the second half of this year Kia's Slovak arm expects to further raise its output, largely on the back of its new model Kia Sportage. "Sports-utility vehicles has seen a substantial change. While Kia Sportage represented some 18 percent of the total output in 2009, along with another model Hyundai ix35 they take up close to half of the plant's output in the first half of this year," said Dvorak.

June was the most fruitful month of 2010, with an output of 20,300 units. In 2010 Kia plans to produce over 200,000 vehicles – Kia cee'd, Kia Sportage and Hyundai ix35.

In the first half-year, engine output has also increased by nearly half year-on-year to more than 153,000.

Kia Motors Slovakia exports to all European countries and is now Slovakia's fourth largest exporter – with sales going mainly to Russia, Great Britain, Germany, Spain and Italy.

The firm employs 2,800 people in Slovakia and has produced more than 600,000 vehicles in the local factory, which was built in 2004-2006 and launched production in December 2006.
