Jaroslav Spisiak Appointed as New Police Corps President (UPDATE)

Bratislava, July 19 (TASR) - Interior Minister Daniel Lipsic (Christian Democratic Movement/KDH) on Monday appointed former police vice-president Jaroslav Spisiak (2001-06) as the new Police Corps president.

Lipsic explained his decision to appoint Spisiak by saying that "results have always been seen in his work". Speaking about the police's priorities, Lipsic highlighted the fight against organised crime and corruption.

"The police must be apolitical but not disinterested - always on the side of decent people," said Lipsic. "There's a difference between a decent man not having a complete first-aid box in his car and a speed demon," said the minister, adding that the police will be given a free hand to make sure that no one, including lobby groups, will be above the law.

"There was nothing else for me to do but to accept the offer," said Spisiak in response to his appointment. He also noted that his future close colleagues are working in other spheres at the moment as retired police officers. "They're ready to give up their pensions just so that they can contribute to improving the job of the Police Corps," he stated.
