President: SaS Desperately Looking for Excuse for Useless Referendum

Bratislava, July 16 (TASR) - The coalition Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party is desperately looking for an excuse for its meaningless and expensive referendum (September 18) that isn't even backed by its coalition partners, President Ivan Gasparovic's spokesman Marek Trubac told TASR on Friday.

Trubac was reacting to claims by member of the referendum petition committee Robert Mistrik, who earlier in the day criticised Gasparovic's remarks that the referendum is pointless and its results won't be binding.

"The president won't endlessly react to statements by SaS representatives. They handed in the petition and the president announced a referendum in line with the Constitution and valid laws," said Trubac, adding that "Mistrik the chemist is trying to perform his own referendum alchemy".
