Brussels, July 16 (TASR-correspondent) - Slovakia on Friday afternoon officially requested relief from the EU's Solidarity Fund for areas hit by the floods in late May and early June, EU Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn's spokesman Ton van Lierop said on the same day.
"A period of evaluation will follow, during which experts will evaluate how justified the request is. It may be a matter of weeks or months," said the spokesman.
After the expert group releases a report, the European Commission will draw up a draft for providing financial resources, which must be agreed on by all EU-member countries and the European Parliament.
According to EU rules, member countries may ask for aid from the Solidarity Fund if the damage exceeds 0.6 percent of GDP posted the year before. The minimum amount of damage in Slovakia would therefore have to exceed €378.21 million. According to the latest estimates, the damage reached around €700 million.
