Pociatek: Alleviating Global Crisis More Important than Compensations

Bratislava, December 10 (TASR) - There are no resources allocated in next year's budget for partial compensation of the clients of the non-banking institutions, said Finance Minister Jan Pociatek (Smer-SD) on Thursday during Question Hour in Parliament.

According to him, alleviating the impact of the global crisis on Slovakia's economy holds a higher priority.

Pociatek stated this in reaction to a question from MP Ivan Farkas (SMK) as to whether the Government will fulfil its promise to compensate the clients of dodgy non-banking financial entities Horizont and BMG by the end of the election term. Pociatek said that although the Government is willing to remedy the situation, a number of technical and legal problems exist that complicate the issue.

However, Farkas said that "the Government simply doesn't want to fulfil the promise included in its own Manifesto". According to him, the Coalition's top politicians have made the promise to compensate people only to win votes. "People gave you their votes and now, when it's necessary to repay the favour, somehow you don't want to," Farkas scoffed at Pociatek.

The Finance Minister countered that Farkas should remember who was in the Government when the non-banking institutions damaged their clients. "Who allowed them to operate? Not this Government, but yours," asserted Pociatek, adding that the current Government at least wants to remedy the situation. "You just mouth off. You did nothing. Don't you at least feel some responsibility for how the system was set up?"
