Bratislava, July 10 (TASR) – Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry started to act as soon as it was contacted by the Slovak tourists stranded in Turkey after the travel agency Karya Tours announced its bankruptcy earlier this week, TASR learned on Saturday.
The Ministry investigated the situation and also called on Turkish hotel managers to be lenient to the Slovak tourists who did not get into trouble by their own fault.
More than one thousand of Slovak tourists are currently stranded in Turkey and another four thousand did not even make it to their holiday destinations after the travel agency Karya Tour, specialising in vacation trips to Turkey and Egypt, went bankrupt on Friday. The hotel managers in the holiday destinations refuse to accommodate the Slovak tourists, claiming that the service has not been paid for.
"We (Slovak Foreign Affairs Ministry) got into contact with the Turkish Foreign Affairs Ministry as well as the governor of the region where the stranded tourists are at the moment. Our consulate in Istanbul is also active," reads a statement from the Ministry issued on Saturday.
Karya Tour has been insured against bankruptcy at the insurer Allianz, which has been contacted by the Ministry. Allianz is currently trying to resolve the situation, either by providing them another accommodation or transport home.
The travel agency claimed on Friday that the problems have been caused by the bankruptcy of an international company called Sunspot, with which Karya Tour has co-operated. "We were trying to resolve the situation through a contract with another company, but we were not successful. The negotiations failed and we went bankrupt," said the general director of Karya Tours Murat Kizilsac.
