Bratislava, July 9 (TASR) - Slovak President Ivan Gasparovic promised co-operation with the new Government on Friday in such a way that it won't lose the support of people.
"I'd like to ask you for mutual acceptance and respect, then our co-operation will be good," said Gasparovic during the appointment of new ministers.
Every state needs political stability and not turbulence, a state which depends to a large degree on co-operation between the Parliament, government and president, according to Gasparovic. "We don't necessarily have to share the same opinion on everything; however, I harbour the conviction that this Government will further maintain social programmes, solidarity and good international policies."
He praised the quartet of SDKU-DS, Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) party, Christian Democratic Movement and Most-Hid for being able to appoint a new Government in a relatively short time following the June 12 parliamentary election. Gasparovic pointed out that there are consequences of the global crisis to address, of which the Coalition might not be aware. "I ask you to stand ready for it," he said.
He wished good luck to new Premier Iveta Radicova (SDKU-DS), paraphrasing the words of Roman orator Cicero - the good government is the one that serves all and hurts none.
Radicova responded by saying that her Cabinet will do its utmost to ensure that four years hence the President will be able to say the Government wasn't good but excellent. "I'll give you my word for it," emphasised Radicova, who ran and lost against Gasparovic for the presidency last year.
According to Radicova, Slovakia faces serious problems due to global crisis, high unemployment, corruption and regional disparities. The mission of the new ministers is to create conditions that will allow people to lead dignified lives, said Radicova. The Government also stands ready for co-operation with other major state institutions as well as meeting commitments stemming from its EU and NATO memberships.
