Bratislava, November 18 (TASR) - Deputy Premier for a Knowledge-based Society, European Affairs, Human Rights and Minorities Dusan Caplovic confirmed after a meeting with European Parliament Chairman Jerzy Buzek on Wednesday that the Slovak Government is open to possible changes in the State Language Act.
According to Caplovic, laws are being drawn up for the people, and therefore they must react to changing situations. He also stated that the amendment that was adopted in summer hasn't been aimed against ethnic minorities in Slovakia or the use of ethnic minority languages; rather its sense consists in the full utilisation of the state language in public affairs and maintaining bilinguality in mixed territories.
Buzek stressed that from the EP's point of view, the crucial thing at the moment is for the Slovak Government to maintain a constant dialogue with national minorities, and the correct implementation of the Act. "If it becomes necessary in the future, it will be good (to amend the Act) if the (state) bodies will be ready to make a change or two in the Act," said Buzek.
