Many Slovaks Can't Distinguish Between Debit and Credit Cards

Bratislava, July 6 (TASR) - A significant number of bank clients in Slovakia doesn't know whether they own a debit or a credit card, according to a survey recently carried out by the Social Research Centre - Infostat.
One third of the respondents claim that they withdraw cash with a credit card, while only 17 percent said they used their debit card. The information is at odds with the statistics on payment cards issued, however.
"According to the data of the Slovak Banking Association (SBA), debit cards represent almost 80 percent of all issued cards, so the gained data shows that a considerable part of the Slovak public doesn't know the difference between a debit and a credit card," according to the research.
Withdrawing money from cashpoints with credit cards is most common among people with university education, employees in the private and public sector and clients aged 25-29. On the other hand, this form of withdrawing money is less often used by clients with lower education, people over 60 and the unemployed.
When it comes to using debit cards – which do not entitle users to access funds beyond what is in their accounts – they are most popular among qualified workers, people with university education, businessmen and self-employed people. Pensioners and respondents with the lowest education stated this option least frequently.
