Council of Europe Recommends Greater Support for Minority Languages

Brussels, November 18 (TASR) - Slovakia needs to provide adequate ethnic languages teaching at all education levels and enhance the preparation of minority language teachers, says the Report On Minority Languages in Slovakia published by the Council of Europe on Wednesday.

The report was worked out in April and Slovak authorities have already sent their responses regarding the individual recommendations.

The document in question is the second report worked out by independent experts monitoring the implementation of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Many problems regarding the use of ethnic languages were already highlighted in the first report, problems which still persist according to the second 120-page report.

Slovakia needs to continue with the introduction of measures that prevent the unwarranted sending of Roma children to special schools, according to the report. Slovak authorities are also advised to enhance television and radio broadcasts in all minority languages and to consider supporting the publication of newspapers in all minority languages.
