Bratislava, July 4 (TASR) - The new government should prioritise internet elections, TV broadcasting for Slovaks abroad and maintaining the grant system of the Association of Slovaks Living Abroad (SZSZ), its chairman Vladimir Skalsky said in an interview for TASR.
Enabling voting via the internet by 2013 is envisaged, said Skalsky. Internet voting was a plank in the campaign platform of the second strongest party of the incoming government Freedom and Solidarity/SaS and is part of the upcoming referendum later this year initiated by SaS.
According to Skalsky, the current election system for Slovaks living abroad is complicated and illogical, as voting via the internet is safer than via mail.
Skalsky stressed that the turnout of Slovaks abroad doubled this year compared to 2006. "Another interesting thing is that the coalition being formed gained immense trust from voters living abroad," he pointed out.
Head of the association also urges the future Culture Minister to launch the TV broadcasting for compatriots. "While the Slovak Radio has its broadcasting for foreign Slovaks, the TV broadcasting has only been discussed – for a long time," noted Skalsky. He also expressed his disappointment about the Slovak media providing little information about the approximately two million Slovaks living abroad.
