Bratislava/Washington, November 18 (TASR) - Foreign Affairs Minister Miroslav Lajcak on Tuesday met Slovak honorary consuls from throughout the USA during the first day of his visit to Washington, TASR was told by the Foreign Affairs Ministry press department on Wednesday.
Lajcak praised the work and activities of individual honorary consuls in promoting Slovakia in the U.S. As well, he thanked them for organising a number of cultural and social events surrounding the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution.
He called upon the consuls to continue to pro-actively support the interests of Slovakia and the presentation of its culture and economy in the USA.
Lajcak officially opened the Memories of Slovakia exhibition at the Slovak Embassy in Washington. The exhibition features more than 30 works of famous Slovak artists on loan from the private collections of fellow Slovaks and their American friends living in the U.S.
Lajcak stressed the importance of the Velvet Revolution, which paved the way for Slovak freedom, democracy, prosperity and independence. Lajcak thanked the many Americans with Slovak roots for maintaining Slovak culture and legacy in the US, and emphasised the success story of Slovakia since the 1989 Revolution.
Lajcak also awarded the Golden Medal of the Foreign Affairs Minister to compatriot Juraj Slavik for his outstanding work on behalf of the Slovak community in U.S.A.
