Economy Ministry Fails to Publish Alternative Oil Pipeline Routes

Bratislava, July 1 (TASR) - Environmentalists from Greenpeace said on Thursday that the Economy Ministry has broken its promise to publish the planned routes of an oil pipeline to Austria which exclude its crossing of the protected area of Zitny Ostrov by the end of June.

Representatives of the Slovak unit of Greenpeace, campaigning against the Government's perceived plans to build the pipeline through the river island Zitny Ostrov, said that this shows it cannot rely on the promises of politicians.

Austria, meanwhile, continues to work according to the original project plans considering the oil pipeline in Slovakia as crossing Zitny Ostrov.

Katerina Ventusova of the Slovak Greenpeace further stated that if the ministry were sincere in its statements not to run the pipeline through Zitny Ostrov it should have informed Austria, with which it had last year signed a memorandum of understanding and co-operation in the energy sector about major change.
