Poll: Seven out of Ten Slovaks Against Loan for Greece

Bratislava, June 30 (TASR) - Seven out of ten Slovaks don't agree with Slovakia providing Greece with financial assistance, while less than a quarter thinks that Slovakia should help the indebted EU member, according to a poll carried out by TNS SK in May and published on Wednesday.

The survey was carried out on a representative sample of 988 respondents over 18. About 81 percent of them think that Slovakia's standard of living isn't high enough to afford to loan money to Greece and 74.9 percent of them think that eurozone countries will only burden themselves with more debts in order to help a country that needs their financial.

As much as 87.7 percent of respondents claim that Slovakia should in the first case take care of its own citizens, despite being a eurozone member.

The Greek financial crisis coincided with the election in Slovakia. Recognising that the new Government might be opposed to both Greek bail-out package and financial safety net framework (ESFS) for other countries facing similar troubles, outgoing prime minister Robert Fico left the decisions up to the new government.
