Emerging Coalition to Have Ten Parliamentary Committees, Opposition Nine

Bratislava, June 29 (TASR) - The structure of the parliamentary committees in the new electoral term won't be different from that in the old one, but the overall number of vice-chairs will be cut by three, SDKU-DS chairman Mikulas Dzurinda told journalists on Tuesday after a meeting between outgoing Parliamentary Chairman Pavol Paska and the chairmen of all parliamentary parties.

The new coalition will have chairs in ten parliamentary committees, while the opposition will chair nine. Specific chairs haven't been proposed yet, but should be decided by July 6.

Coalition MPs will preside over the following committees: constitutional, budgetary, economic, agriculture, social, defence and security, foreign affairs, mandate and immunity, healthcare, and European affairs.

The opposition will oversee the following committees: education, media, public administration, human rights, and conflicts of interest, as well as committees supervising the Slovak Intelligence Service (SIS), Military Defence Intelligence and the National Security Office (NBU). [There are two committees supervising NBU. - ed. note].

Dzurinda expects that debate will be commonplace in Parliament during the upcoming term of office, unlike over the past four years. "Parliament is a place in which we should talk, exchange opinions, compete for better ideas. We shouldn't be afraid of an open exchange of opinions," he stressed.

Dzurinda didn't want to reveal whether he thinks that Freedom and Solidarity (SaS) chairman Richard Sulik would make a good parliamentary chairman, however. "SaS came second among the coalition parties (in the election), so I understand Richard Sulik's interest in this post," he said.
